International Artist Anthony Shrag Comes To Louisville
In case you haven't met me yet, my name is Lauren Bader. I am one of the co-founders of HOBA Gallery. I wanted to tell all of you about an event I am hosting at Open Community Arts Center on January 26th.
I had the pleasure of meeting artist Anthony Schrag at a 21C artist talk a few months back and learned that he was planning one of his community art projects right here in Louisville. He invited me to be a part of the project and I am so excited to announce that I will be hosting one of many simultaneous events happening in Louisville on January 26th.
Honk Your Fumpet! Art + Music is a city wide event organized by Schrag in conjunction with KyCAD and the Louisville Orchestra. The project is a collaboration of artists and musicians all around Louisville all set to perform their own version of Pictures at an Exhibition (1874) by Modest Mussorgsky at the same moment in different venues around the city.
The concert presents an example of some excellently talented musicians and beautiful, classical works: however it also has an embedded 'politics of access' which relates to questions of who can afford to attend such concerts. It also relates to a 'hierarchy of culture' that places western, 'high art' art the centre, and other cultural expressions as less valued or less supported. - Anthony Schrag
It is Schrag's intention that this project lift each artist and event to the same level as the "high art" of the Louisville Orchestra. Each event will be promoted at an equal level and orchestra goers will be given a program listing all participating artists.
For my portion of the project I have invited one of my favorite local bands, Bird Dog and His Coyote Gospel Chior to perform the piece. BDCGC is an experimental jazz/rock band based in Louisville KY. They describe themselves as a psychedelic freight train, Appalachian freedom jazz, southern revival band. Along with this performance we will have a full line up to round out the evening.
The show will be at Open Community Arts Center on Saturday January 26th. Doors are at 7pm and the music begins at 7:30 with the main event at 8pm. Be sure to RSVP on our facebook event page!
